TOOTH COLORED FILLINGS
Tooth Colored Fillings are wonderful options if you are having cavities filled or if you would like to replace your older, unsightly metal fillings. Dr. Cannon at Gentle Dentistry chooses to provide all her patients with non-metal dental restorations so that their smiles look as good as possible.
Cavities can result from a number of different things. A cavity is formed from the tooth being demineralized by bacteria formed on the surface of the tooth. For instance, if you eat a lot of sweet foods, bacteria develops on the surface of the tooth, the bacteria creates an acid that breaks down the tissue the tooth is made of.
Cavities can also be caused by small amounts of food being left between teeth. These small pieces of food will develop bacteria around them, which develop acid that is destructive to the tooth material.
In order to restore the tooth, a dentist must rid the tooth of the decayed cavity material and fill the hole in the tooth with a filling. In the past, metal fillings were used. Unfortunately, metal fillings do not bond to the tooth, and they actually weaken the tooth’s integrity.
Dr. Cannon uses white porcelain fillings, or porcelain inlays and onlays, in order to fill cavities in your teeth. A white porcelain filling is placed in a cavity to restore the look and function of the tooth.
White porcelain fillings take a couple appointments, but the result is far superior to older, metal fillings. For the white porcelain filling to be placed, the decayed cavity material is removed from the tooth, and an impression is made of the cavity.
This impression is then sent to a dental lab where the white porcelain filling is constructed to fill your unique cavity. While the white porcelain filling is being created, you will be fitted with a temporary filling.
After the white porcelain filling has been returned from the dental lab, Dr. Cannon will invite you back to her office so that she can remove the temporary filling and fill your cavity with the permanent white porcelain filling.
After the temporary filling has been removed, a bonding agent is applied to the cavity, and the white porcelain filling is placed in the cavity. Then, Dr. Cannon will use a special high-intensity light to harden the bonding agent and permanently affix the white porcelain filling to your tooth.
The result is a much more esthetic dental restoration that will last for many years and strengthen your tooth.
